Still no sign of my puzzle book, but I'm too paranoid about the thread dying again to leave it inactice for more than a day, so here are a few from the net. (No cheating and looking up the answers, please!)
Explain how:
• A woman brought her car up beside a hotel, and knew immediately that she was about to become bankrupt.
• A man went outside without an umbrella or a raincoat, yet did not get wet.
• Two men were drinking in a pub. Two women walked in. The first man said, "I have to go, my wife and daughter are here." The second man turned around and said, "I have to go too, my wife and daughter just arrived as well.
• A man is lying face down in the middle of a desert. On his back is something that could have saved his life.

The first man's wife and dauther were already there, while the second man's wife and daughter just came.

Oh oh, so close! But go back to paying for the hotel... She wasn't particularly expecting it, and she doesn't really have a choice about paying for it.

Grubs- Yes. The first had a daughter, who married the second man, then the first man was widowed and married the daughter of his son-in-law.
And no to both of you on the second one. The answer's pretty funny, in my opinion. Think smaller. Like, miniscule. And how could she know she was bankrupt? How could she know exactly how much money she had? (She didn't just come from the bank or anything.)
